Feeling overstimulated is an unpleasant and aversive experience. Highly sensitive individuals suffer from overstimulation sooner and more often than many other people and may respond to chronic overstimulation by developing depression. This article describes major sources of over-stimulation which might lead to depression in susceptible individuals. Animal models have shown that when a creature comes to believe that it is unable to flee a tormenting environment it develops feelings of “learned helplessness” and becomes hopeless and depressed (Seligman,1967)
