Essential oils are believed to naturally enhance moods and lighten the spirits, making life a bit more livable.

Essential oils are commonly extracted from natural raw materials through water or steam distillation. Plant material is heated with water and brought to a boil. The steam containing the volatile essential oil is then run through a cooler, where it condenses. The essential oil appears as a thin film on top of the liquid or if heavier than water, the essential oil will sink to the bottom of the container. The oil is then separated from the water, according to Kurt Schnaubelt, PhD, author of Advanced Aromatherapy.

The versatility of essential oils allows them to be added to a warm bath, combined with a carrier oil and used on the skin, or added to a diffuser that scents the air.

Emotions Influenced by Essential Oils

Essential oils are believed to influence one’s attitude and clarify one’s thinking. A few drops of essential oil can be placed on a tissue or placed in a vial for brief inhalations during the course of the day to refresh one’s thought processes and keep stress away. Marge Clark, author of Essential Oils and Aromatics suggests the following emotions can be influenced by specific essential oils:

Anger: try chamomile, jasmine, marjoram, palma rosa, rose, rosemary or ylang-ylang;

Anxiety: try neroli, bergamot, Roman chamomile, frankincense, geranium, lavender, orange, patchouli, rose, sandalwood, sweet marjoram or vetiver;

Disappointment: try bergamot, cypress, frankincense, jasmine, orange, rose;

Fear: try cedarwood, fennel, ginger, patchouli, sandalwood, spikenard, thyme;

Grief: try bergamot, chamomile, jasmine, marjoram, neroli, rose;

Hysteria: try Roman chamomile, lavender, neroli, orange, tea tree, vetiver;

Impatience: try chamomile, clary, frankincense, lavender;

Indecision: try basil, clary, cypress, jasmine, lemon, patchouli, peppermint;

Jealousy: try jasmine, rose;

Loneliness: try benzoin, marjoram;

Fatigue (emotional and mental): try basil, clary, cardamon, cinnamon leaf or bark, clove bud, coriander, eucalyptus citriodora, ginger, grapefruit, helichrysum, jasmine, juniper, orange, palmarosa, peppermint, rosemary, thyme, vetiver, ylang-ylang;

Fatigue (physical): try basil, elemi, ginger, lemon, lavender, orange, peppermint, rosemary;

Nervousness: try chamomile, clary, coriander, frankincense, neroli, orange, vetiver;

Panic: try chamomile, clary, geranium, jasmine, juniper, lavender, neroli, ylang-ylang;

Sadness: try benzoin, jasmine, rose, rosewood;

Shyness: try black pepper, ginger, jasmine, patchouli, peppermint, rose, neroli, ylang-ylang;

Stress: try bergamot, Atlas cedarwood, Roman chamomile, all citrus oils, clary sage, frankincense, geranium, lavender, sweet marjoram, melissa, neroli, patchouli, petigrain, rose (absolute and otto), rosemary, sandalwood, vetiver, ylang-ylang;

Suspicion: tray jasmine, lavender;

Tension: try chamomile, clary, cypress, frankincense, geranium, jasmine, lavender, lemon, marjoram, neroli, orange, rose, rosewood, sandalwood, ylang-ylang.

Stress Reliever Bath Blends of Essential Oils

Mix together 2 drops lavender, 2 drops sandalwood and 1 drop Roman chamomile essential oils. Add 6 to 8 drops of the blended oils to a warm bath.

Mix together 2 drops geranium, 2 drops petigrain and 1 drop neroli essential oils. Add 6 to 8 drops of the blended oils to a warm bath.

Room Diffuser Blend Essential Oils to Relieve Stress

Add any of these single essential oils to an electronic or candle room diffuser to relieve stress: black spruce, bergamot, clementine or mandarin essential oil. Additionally, 80 to 100 drops of essential oil can be added to 4 ounces of distilled water in a spray bottle, shaken well, and sprayed into the air.

Wake Up Shower Blend of Essential Oils

Mix together 10 drops of peppermint, 5 drops of orange, 5 drops of spearmint and 3 drops of rosemary cineole essential oils. Add 20 drops of the blended oils to 1 fluid ounce of liquid soap or unscented shower gel for an invigorating shower.

Although essential oils are attributed with offering many healthy benefits, one should test for sensitivity by mixing a drop of essential oil with a carrier oil, then apply it to the skin. If redness or sensitivity develops, avoid using the oil.
